Veteran Benefits Guide

Free VA Headstones & Burial Benefits for New Mexico Veterans

Every eligible veteran deserves a proper memorial. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs provides free headstones and grave markers — here's what you need to know, and how Rose Rock Monument can help with the rest.

Does the VA Provide Free Headstones?

Yes. The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) provides a free headstone, grave marker, or medallion for eligible veterans buried in national, state, or private cemeteries. This benefit is available to all honorably discharged veterans — at no cost to the family for the marker itself.

The free marker typically comes as a government-issue granite or bronze flat marker with the veteran's name, dates, branch, and rank. Families can also request upright granite markers for eligible veterans in national cemeteries.

What Is — and Isn't — Covered

✅ What the VA covers:

  • The headstone or grave marker itself
  • Standard government-issue inscriptions (name, dates, branch, rank, war era)
  • Delivery to the cemetery of record (for national cemeteries)

❌ What the VA does NOT cover:

  • Setting fees (installation at private/state cemeteries)
  • Foundation preparation
  • Custom engravings or personalized designs
  • Any monument beyond the standard government marker

For private cemetery installations — such as a local NM cemetery rather than a national cemetery — families pay the setting and installation fee separately. This is where Rose Rock Monument can help.

How to Apply for a VA Headstone or Marker

The application process is straightforward. Here are the steps:

  1. Obtain VA Form 40-1330 — the "Application for Standard Government Headstone or Marker." Available at va.gov or your local VA office.
  2. Gather documentation — DD-214 (discharge papers), death certificate, and burial information.
  3. Submit the form — mail, fax, or submit online. Allow 6–8 weeks for processing and shipping.
  4. Arrange installation — contact the cemetery for installation requirements and fees. Rose Rock can handle the setting for private NM cemeteries.

Important: The VA marker is shipped to the funeral home or cemetery — not directly to the family. Coordinate with the cemetery in advance.

Fort Bliss, Holloman AFB & New Mexico Veterans

Southern New Mexico has a proud military heritage. Fort Bliss in El Paso is one of the largest Army installations in the country, and Holloman Air Force Base in Alamogordo is home to F-117 heritage and active Air Force units. Many veterans and their families in our service area have ties to these installations.

Veterans buried at Fort Bliss National Cemetery in El Paso receive full VA burial benefits, including the free marker and installation. Veterans buried at private cemeteries in Alamogordo, Las Cruces, Roswell, or elsewhere in Southern NM are also eligible for the VA marker — but the installation is a separate service.

Rose Rock Monument has deep experience with veteran memorial work throughout the region. We know the VA process, understand military tribute designs, and are honored to serve those who served our country.
